Vinicius Pontes – Acadêmico do 4° semestre de Relações Internacionais da UNAMA

Kenneth Waltz foi um professor e pesquisador nascido na cidade de Michigan, nos Estados Unidos, no ano de 1924. Waltz exerceu a função de professor na Columbia University, sendo considerado um dos maiores estudiosos da universidade por ter escrito obras fundamentais para a vertente neorealista das Relações Internacionais(RI), como a obra “Man, The State and War”.

Na obra em questão, Waltz buscou analisar as causas da guerra, discorrendo acerca da estrutura “anárquica” do sistema internacional e dos principais padrões de ações dos atores estatais. Por meio de tal análise, o autor estabeleceu conceitos que seriam atemporais para as RI, como a “balança de poder” e o “bandwagon”.

”According to the first image of international relations, the locus of the important causes of war is found in the nature and behavior of man. Wars result from selfishness, from misdirected aggressive impulses, from stupidity. Other causes are secondary and have to be interpreted in the light of these factors. If these are the primary causes of war, then the elimination of war must come through uplifting and enlightening men or securing their psychic-social readjustment”(WALTZ, 1959, Pag. 16).
